Toyota and BMW strengthen their collaboration in hydrogen technology

Toyota Motor Corporation and the BMW Group have signed an agreement to strengthen their collaboration in the field of hydrogen, aiming to achieve complete carbon neutrality. The two companies will work together on the development of a third generation fuel cell system and the improvement of related infrastructure. This system will be installed in models from both manufacturers, providing customers with a wider range of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). As a first step, BMW plans to launch its first mass production FCEV in 2028.

The collaboration aims to create synergies in development and to reduce costs by combining powertrain units, expanding the demand for both commercial and passenger vehicles, and making FCEVs a more affordable option. This partnership will also contribute to the advancement of a hydrogen-based society.

Both companies believe that cooperation with partners who share the same vision is essential to realizing a hydrogen society. Toyota and BMW will promote a sustainable hydrogen supply by creating demand, while working closely with hydrogen production companies, as well as distribution and refueling facilities, to ensure a stable supply of hydrogen and lower costs.

Toyota Motor Corporation and the BMW Group, two companies with a long tradition of innovation, are now joining forces to combine their expertise and technological strengths.

It is worth noting that the two companies signed an agreement in December 2011 to establish a partnership in environmental technology. Since then, they have jointly advanced the development of environmentally friendly technologies, including fuel cells and sports cars, for more than a decade.

Koji Sato, President and Representative Director of Toyota Motor Corporation, stated:

“We are pleased that the collaboration between BMW and Toyota is entering a new phase. Throughout our long partnership, we have confirmed that BMW and Toyota share the same passion for automobiles and a common belief in open technologies and the multi-path approach toward achieving carbon neutrality.

Building on these shared values, we will deepen our cooperation in areas such as the joint development of next-generation fuel cell systems and the expansion of infrastructure, with the aim of realizing a hydrogen society. Together with BMW and our partners across various industries, we will accelerate our efforts to create a future where hydrogen energy supports society.”
