Toyota Motor Corporation and the BMW Group have signed an agreement to strengthen their collaboration in the field of hydrogen, aiming to achieve complete carbon neutrality. The two companies will work together on the development of a third generation fuel cell system and the improvement of related infrastructure. This system will be installed in models from both manufacturers, providing customers with a wider range of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). As a first step, BMW plans to launch its first mass production FCEV in 2028.
The collaboration aims to create synergies in development and to reduce costs by combining powertrain units, expanding the demand for both commercial and passenger vehicles, and making FCEVs a more affordable option. This partnership will also contribute to the advancement of a hydrogen-based society.
Both companies believe that cooperation with partners who share the same vision is essential to realizing a hydrogen society. Toyota and BMW will promote a sustainable hydrogen supply by creating demand, while working closely with hydrogen production companies, as well as distribution and refueling facilities, to ensure a stable supply of hydrogen and lower costs.
