Here’s a quick breakdown on how each type of car works.

 

  • Electric car (EV): Runs solely on electricity and you plug it in to charge.
  • Plug-in hybrid: Uses petrol and electric power like a hybrid, but it has a larger battery that you can plug in to charge.
  • Hybrid: Uses petrol and electric power. The battery recharges while you drive, so you don’t plug it in.

Driving an electric car can help lower your running costs, especially if you charge at home on an EV electricity tariff. They’re also smooth and quiet to drive, with zero tailpipe emissions while you’re on the road. And with home charging, you may only need to stop at service stations on longer journeys.

Charging an EV is simple and flexible, with options to suit your lifestyle:

 

  • At Home For fast, efficient home charging, a dedicated wallbox like Toyota HomeCharge is ideal. It offers features such as scheduled charging via the MyToyota app, so you can charge when energy prices are at their lowest. You can also charge more slowly using a standard domestic socket.
  • On the Go When you're out and about, you’ll find thousands of public charging points in convenient locations like supermarket car parks and retail parks. For longer journeys, rapid and ultra-rapid chargers at motorway service stations provide the quickest way to top up your battery. 

Charging a plug-in hybrid is simple and means that you can travel further in electric mode. You can plug in to a dedicated wallbox which can be fitted at home, such as Toyota HomeCharge, or even through a domestic socket. When you buy a Toyota PHEV, you will receive two cables:

 

  • 3 Pin Plug cable this is used for slow charging with a domestic 3 pin plug.
  • 32A Type A Mennekes cable this is used for fast charging at home with a dedicated EV charger or when you are using an AC public charger, often found in workplaces and car parks

The electric range of a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) depends on the model. For example, a Prius Plug-in can travel in pure-electric mode for up to 100 kilometers* when fully charged, while a RAV4 has an all-electric range of up to 136 kilometers*. If the battery runs out of charge, your vehicle switches back to operating as a hybrid car, combining petrol and regenerated battery power to finish your journey.

No. The great thing about Toyota self-charging hybrids, is that there is no need to plug-in. Simply fuel your hybrid as normal at a service station, with no plugging-in required.
* An electrified car is one propelled by one or more electric motors to some extent. Some electrified cars, including Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids, also have a petrol engine. Others, like the Toyota bZ4X, are entirely electric.
