The first production fuel cell vehicle
"The Mirai is at the forefront of a new age of hydrogen fuel cell cars that allows you to enjoy long distance zero-emissions driving. As well as only producing water from its tailpipe – which means no impact on our planet when you're driving – Mirai brings the unique Toyota Hybrid driving experience to a new level.
When you experience Mirai’s silent, responsive and intuitive feel-good drive it will instantly put a big smile on your face."
How it works
It all starts with hydrogen
When you pump hydrogen into the Mirai, the gas travels to carbon fibre fuel tanks where it’s stored.
Then comes air
Oxygen from the outside enters through the Mirai’s front air vent.
Which makes electricity
Hydrogen and air travel separately to the fuel cell stack where electricity is generated through a chemical reaction.
Moving you forward
When you put your foot on the accelerator, the electricity powers the motor which is activated to move the Mirai.
Leaving behind nothing but water
In the end, the only by-product of this process is water, which leaves through the tailpipe.
The anatomy of Mirai
No internal combustion engine. Zero-emissions driving. Explore the inner workings of the Mirai, the car built with flexible Toyota Hybrid architecture and know-how at its heart.
Vents
Large intake grills within the front bumper provide cooling to the Mirai’s radiators.
Power Control Unit
The Power Control Unit has two roles: managing the power from the fuel cell stack and battery, as well as readying its supply to the motor. This is part of what makes the Mirai so efficient.
Fuel Cell Stack
The Toyota Fuel Cell Stack generates power by combining hydrogen with oxygen from the outside air. The stack features a compact size and a world-leading power output for responsive performance.
Hydrogen tanks
Two high-pressure carbon fibre tanks store the hydrogen as fuel. These lightweight tanks feature a world-leading power density and are capable of withstanding incredibly high forces.
Battery
Just like other Toyota Hybrids, the Mirai has a nickel-metal hydride battery. It stores energy that is recovered while decelerating and also assists the fuel cell stack when you need more power during acceleration.
