Accelerator Pedal Concern Q&A for Europe (29/01/2010)

Q1: What is the condition?

A1: There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.

Q2: What is the cause?

A2: Some accelerator pedal mechanisms may become worn. As a result of this wear combined with certain operating and environmental conditions, friction in the mechanism may increase and intermittently result in the accelerator pedal being hard to depress, slow to return or, in the worst case, stick in a partially open position.

Q3: Are there any warnings that this condition exists?

A3: In some cases, the driver may notice that the accelerator pedal is harder to depress or is slow to return. In some cases, the driver may notice a rough or chattering feeling when depressing/ releasing the accelerator pedal.

Q4. What is the likelihood that my vehicle will experience this condition?

A4: The condition is rare and does not occur suddenly. It can occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.

Q5: Which vehicles are involved in European market?

A5: The models involved and production periods of the vehicles that are potentially affected are as follows.

Q7: Will the action involve Right Hand Drive and Left Hand Drive vehicles?

A7: Yes, both Right Hand Drive and Left Hand Drive are involved.

Q8: Will the action involve petrol and diesel vehicles?

A8: Yes, both petrol and diesel vehicles are involved.

Q9: Have there been any accidents reported?

A9: No.

Q10: In US a Production Stop has been issued for the involved vehicles. Is same action taken in Europe?

A10: No, starting from August 2009, a running change in production has been implemented model-by-model. Current production is counter measured.

Q11: What is Toyota going to do in Europe?

A11: We have announced a recall in Europe for this matter.

Q12: What should I do if my vehicle is involved in this campaign but so far, have not experienced this condition?

A12: This condition is rare. However, if you have any concerns please contact your nearest Toyota Dealer for assistance.

Q13: I have noticed that my accelerator pedal is hard to depress, slow to return or is unsmooth during operation. What should I do?

A13: Please immediately contact your nearest Toyota Dealer for assistance.

Q14: What if you experience a sticking accelerator pedal while driving?

A14: Each circumstance may vary, and drivers must use their best judgment, but Toyota is providing the following instructions.
• For vehicles with manual transmission, depress the clutch pedal and shift to Neutral and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road and turn off the engine.
• For vehicles with automatic transmission, Multi Mode Transmission or CVT: Shift the transmission gear select lever to the Neutral (N) position and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road and turn off the engine.
• If you need to stop immediately, the vehicle can be controlled by stepping firmly and steadily on the brake pedal. Do not pump the brake pedal as it will deplete the vacuum utilized for the power brake assist.
• If unable to put the vehicle in Neutral, turn the engine OFF. This will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.
• If the vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push the button for at least three seconds to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button.
• If the vehicle is equipped with a conventional key-ignition, turn the ignition key to the ACC position to turn off the engine. Do NOT remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel. In the event that a driver experiences an accelerator pedal that sticks in a partial open throttle position or returns slowly to idle position, the vehicle can be controlled with firm and steady application of the brakes. The brakes should not be pumped repeatedly because it could deplete vacuum assist, requiring stronger brake pedal pressure. The vehicle should be driven to the nearest safe location, the engine shut off and a Toyota dealer contacted for assistance.
