Toyota GT 86: Passion is back
The Toyota GT 86 makes its world debut at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota’s eagerly awaited GT 86 makes its hotly anticipated world debut on November 30th at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. As the most compact 4-seater sports car on the market, the GT 86 is designed to give form to the intrinsic joy of driving.
GT 86 is also the world’s only combination of a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, offering an ultra-low centre of gravity and optimum power-to-weight ratio. Its unique powertrain incorporates a lightweight 200 DIN HP 2.0 litre 4 cylinder boxer engine, with Toyota’s power-enhancing D-4S technology. Yet even with all this power, both fuel consumption and C02 levels remain low.
There’s a choice of six-speed transmissions; either a manual offering quick, precise shifting via a short throw lever – or an automatic with wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
GT 86 has bold, simple yet iconic styling that incorporates two key pillars of a new Toyota design language. ‘Under Priority’ frontal design places the emphasis on a larger lower grille and lower part of the car for a distinctive, more assertive appearance, and a ‘Keen Look’ approach for clear, intelligent and expressive styling.
In addition, its aggressive, sporty appearance is highlighted by purpose-made 17” alloy wheels with distinct ‘86’ piston logos, chrome dual rear exhausts and LED headlamps.
Behind the wheel everything is designed to be a natural extension of the driver’s own body. Dashboard displays give at-a-glance visibility during sports driving, while the seats themselves offer maximum support under acceleration g-forces from all directions. The Vehicle Stability System is also switchable, giving the driver ultimate control of the vehicle and keeping the driving experience pure.
The GT 86 perfectly embodies the iconic, legendary racing history of Toyota. It’s a history that stretches all the way back to the 1960s with the Sports 800, the very first vehicle with a front-mounted boxer engine and rear wheel drive. Then came the Toyota 2000GT, with its classic racing car styling. In the 1980s, racing enthusiasts were rewarded with the famous Toyota AE 86, which enjoyed a reputation for embodying the fundamental joy of driving and was the main source of inspiration for the GT 86.
A proud racing history. And, with the new GT 86, an exhilarating future.
